Tour the Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden to understand the lives and experiences of the first two owners of the home, Shem Burbank and Oliver Phelps. Although the two men lived during the same period, they experienced the events of the late 18th century in very different ways. How did their political views and the opportunities they pursued during the American Revolution change their fortunes – or lack thereof? Learn about Colonial-era trade and economics, consider real estate speculation and Indigenous people’s land rights, and see how changes in taste and style from the Colonial to the Federal periods are reflected in the incredible architecture of this beautiful house.
